Top 10 Plastic Recycling Facts

So recycling is dull right?

We all know we should put our plastic bottles into the right box and our glass into another but what happens if we don’t? Aside from the obvious death by drowning in white lightning bottles here’s some little know facts about plastic, its waste and its lesser known uses…

1. Funky fungus – There’s a type of fungus in the amazon that can survive on feeding off plastic alone.

2. Wrap game – Enough cling film is made each year to wrap the entire state of Texas.

3. Forgotten your Oyster?- The Beijing subway allow travellers to use plastic bottles as a form of payment for tickets.

4. Can’t find Nemo? – 1,000,000 sea creatures are killed each year by plastic bags and plastic that wasn’t recycled.

5. This little light of mine – 1 recycled plastic bottle would save enough energy to power a 60-watt light bulb for 3 hours.

6. EPA EPA – The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that recycling one ton of plastic conserves approximately 3.8 barrels of crude oil.

7. Break away – In the ocean one litre plastic bottle can break up into such small pieces that it could end up on every beach in the world.

8. Energy saver – Recycling plastic saves twice as much energy as burning it in an incinerator.

9. Dead sea – The area of mostly plastic rubbish called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is the size of texas and is actually an ocean vortex which draws marine debris in. No country will take responsibility to clean it up.

10. Meanwhile in China… 1 million unsold copies of Robbie Williams ‘Rudebox’ album was used to pave roads.

Recycled UK Target the NHS with X Ray Film Recycling Solution

A thriving Black Country recycling specialist is targeting a record year after developing a new solution for disposing of time expired x-ray films for the medical sector.

Recycled UK, has created bespoke vision imaging software that could save NHS Healthcare Trusts hundreds of thousands of pounds every year.

The technology, which has been developed with an industry leading professional, can set specific parameters to filter the files to ensure only the right ones are extracted and securely destroyed.

It also takes a digital image of the label, including patient ID, so the Trusts not only receive an electronic record but one that can be searched for in EXEL to help with recovery of information.

All work is carried out in compliance with hospital information governance and medical record policy and the first trial orders have already been successfully completed.

Recycled UK believe the initial marketplace could be worth more than £1m per annum, with each NHS Trust faced with disposal of thousands of time expired x-ray films.

Paul Green, Managing Director of Recycled UK, explained:

“This is a massive opportunity for both businesses and one that we have invested nearly £100,000 on so far, predominantly in creating unique software and ensuring the right processes are in place.

“Currently, x-ray films take up valuable space and can be expensive to retrieve even before disposal, with some NHS Trusts paying monthly storage fees as well.”

He continued: “What we are offering is the opportunity to take all of the hassle out of the situation. We’ll collect the files, filter using the vision imaging software, securely dispose of them and then provide a certificate of destruction and an electronic record.

“Better still, there’s absolute no cost and the Trusts even get a rebate from the silver we extract from the X-ray files.”

Recycled UK are also turning their attention to other sectors that may require this service, including veterinary, dentistry and industrial.

Paul Cotton, Production Director picked up the story:

“So far, every Trust that has trialed it has been delighted with the time savings, the speed of the process and the peace of mind that files will be disposed of securely and an electronic record kept on a database. The fact they actually use it as a revenue stream is another major plus, especially when budgets for the NHS are being squeezed.”

Diversification into X-ray files is part of an ambitious growth plan for Recycled UK, which has seen it secure a £2.5m turnover this year.

The company is a fully licensed and authorised waste management service, specialising in the recycling of all hard plastics, cardboard and film.

Investment in two picking lines, an automated baler and an extension to its Cannon Business Park factory in Coseley to 50,000 sq ft has taken place in the last twelve months.

This gives the firm the capacity to process 100 tonnes a week, with a further 150 tonnes of material not commercially suitable for the UK shipped overseas.

Paul concluded: “We’ve taken 12 new people on in the last two years and expect more employment opportunities to follow once the vision imaging software is fully up and running.

“It’s an exciting time to be involved in the business and great for the Black Country that we are delivering innovative recycling solutions to clients all over the world.”

1st Birthday for our Bonded Warehouse

Our bonded warehouse celebrated its first birthday before Christmas and is proving to be a greatest asset for the business.

We are now processing and securely destroying over 30 tonnes of CDs, DVDs and video games ever week and clients accessing this service range from blue chip corporate, entertainment heavyweights and the pubic sector.

Over £200,000 has been invested into the facility, which now features twelve picking stations, baling machines and an automated shredder and balerŠthis means the item intended for destruction never leaves the track.

We believe this expansion has already added more than £1m to our annual turnover and created about ten new jobs in total.

So what makes the service so popular?

With counterfeit goods such a big issue for firms, customers are demanding total peace of mind. From the minute the product arrives at Coseley in one of our trucks, we log it then track it throughout the various secure destruction phases.

The client even gets a record of its destruction and through a web link can watch their order being completed. Better still, all of this is free of charge.

We have just been audited, approved and re-accredited by FACT (Federation Against Copyright Theft), which is massive in our industry and will lead to even more work.

X-Ray Film Disposal

We offer a new solution for disposing of time expired x-ray films for the medical sector.

The technology, which has been developed with an industry leading professional, can set specific parameters to filter the files to ensure only the right ones are extracted and securely destroyed.

It also takes a digital image of the label, including patient ID, so the NHS Trusts not only receive an electronic record but one that can also be searched for in EXEL to help with recovery of information.

All work is carried out in compliance with hospital information governance and medical record policy and many orders have already been successfully completed.

Recycled UK is also working with veterinary practices, private healthcare providers and companies looking to dispose of their industrial x-rays.

How it works

  • An initial viability review and investigation into the financial potential
  • Recycled UK take delivery of files from off-site storage to a secure location
  • We remove files from the hospital’s on-site storage
  • Files are sorted in compliance with hospital information governance and medical records policy
  • Expired files are electronically recorded before being securely destroyed
  • Silver is recovered
  • Payment is sent to the NHS Trust

Benefits of our Vision Imaging Software

  • No upfront fees
for the NHS Trust, crucial with tighter budgets
  • Top rebate prices
provide new funding opportunities
  • Secure file destruction
  • Vision imaging used to store destroy files
  • Reduce on-site & off-site storage costs

There were no costs to us and in fact we gained an income from the process

We needed to reduce our overall annual expenditure and we found Recycled UK could potentially save us over £18,000 a year in rental fees.

Plant Investment

All recycling is completed at our 50,000 sq ft centre in the heart of the West Midlands, providing ease of access to the UK’s main motorway networks.

We currently have six shredding and granulating lines, ‘Weima’ and ‘Untha’ shredders, ‘Rapid’ and ‘Cumberland’ granulators along with ‘eddy’ current magnets plus twin bagging stations to ensure speed and accuracy of production.

Our capacity is further boosted by ‘Untha’ single shaft shredders that can take everything from Polycarb CDs to HDPE 1100 litre wheelie bins and our ‘Rapid’ granulators that turn material into 8mm chips to be used for re-manufacture.

This year, we have invested over £250,000 into extending our capacity and building a bonded warehouse, which is dedicated to the secure destruction of sensitive information and valuable products.

We also purchased a fully automatic baling machine to bale LDPE film/cardboard and the installation of a new shredding and granulating line to granulate various polymer types to customer specification.
